An Easy One Minute Meditation Technique »

“It will take a few minutes to learn this stress- busting meditation, but only sixty seconds to use it. Why not make it a regular part of your day?”

Maybe learning to meditate intimidates you, and in any case it’s tough to find the time for daily meditation. The solution to both problems is an easy meditation you can learn right now, that will only take a minute to do each day.

An Easy Meditation Technique

Breathing through your mouth expands your chest, but if you breath through your nose you’ll notice how your abdomen extends. You see, nose-breathing causes the diaphram to pull air to the bottom of your lungs. This delivers a good dose of oxygen into your bloodstream and brain. It also tends to relax you.

Breathing through your nose is healthier, and it’s the basis of this one-minute meditation. You simply close your eyes, let the tension go out of your muscles, let go of your thoughts (to the extent possible), and take four slow, deep breaths through your nose, paying attention to your breathing.

Is Meditation This Easy?

You’re not likey to get into a deep meditative state with this simple exercise. You will get benefits, though. These will almost certainly include a clearer mind and a reduction in stress.

Try to develop a “trigger” for your meditation. You can do your four breaths when you get into the car, for example, or right after lunch each day. A trigger is a place or time that reminds you, so your meditation becomes a habit.

Some may say this isn’t “real” meditation, but there’s nothing wrong with enjoying the relaxation you’ll get from this technique. You can always pursue deeper meditation later, if you wish. In the meantime, remember that not everything has to be difficult to be of value. Why not do an easy one-minute meditation right now?

Tai Chi Chuan Instructor has Not had a Lesson in Tai Chi! »

This is going to be, for some, an upsetting article on tai chi chuan. I’ve never taken instruction in the art of Tai Chi Chuan, you see, but my tai chi is the best. I don’t mean to be self serving, but let us see if you can find fault with me after you have read how I came up with my tai chi. I began learning tai chi with a book, Modified Tai Chi for Health by Lee Ying Arng. Every night I spent hours memorizing the form, trying to figure out the applications, trying to figure out the meaning. And, tell the truth, it didn’t mean much. So I went through books by Chen Man Ching, and I read Chen and Yang and Wu and Sun, but they all spoke this gobbledegook that didn’t make sense. So I began doing my Karate, I had near ten years experience in Kang Duk Won karate, and the thing started to resolve. I was using good, old karate power to juice up the form, and it worked, and then I was able to make what was happening into Tai Chi power. More important, I was neglecting all the mysticism and bushwah philosophy in the books and using physics. The martial arts, you see, as taught through the oriental method, are taught through the memorization of random strings of data. In physics you look for a reason, and a logic, and that will lead you to a concept. Now, ancient stories claim tai chi was created in a dream by san feng after he watched a fight between a crane and a snake. Or, it was created by an old, retired general in a village who wanted to make up games for the children. Neither of these concepts can be proven, but we can’t just discount them out of hand. Maybe the general in Chen village was old, couldn’t do the martial arts the way they should be done, careful not to hurt himself, and actually came up with something. And the vision of the snake and the crane, though I espouse physics I would not disclaim the value of visions, which are the dreams and inspiration of the human race. Still, whether rehabilitation of the aged and injured, or big dreams, tai chi does not make sense without the application of physics. So this is what I want you to do, I want you to go to a library and get a book on physics. Make it a simple book, kids pictures for illustrations, that sort of thing. It would really help if it was about a motor. Now, go over that book, and make lists of the terms are the same as in tai chi chuan. Rooting is grounding, what are these things called leads, where is the generator, and so on. Do that, and when the deep innards of your tai chi chuan start to reposition, do not come complaining to me.

Should my next certification be Yoga or Pilates? »

I am a fitness instructor who specializes in dance, but I want to broaden my services. I want to invest the next few months in either Yoga or Pilates but not both (until later in the future). Which do you think is the most popular and why? Thank you in advance for your help!

I would go with yoga. I think it has been around longer and has withstood the test of time.

Copacabana »

 Copacabana

It’s a view to the right when walking down the Copacabana. The Copacabana beach is something special because usually when looking at the sea, the sea disappears into the sky, the horizon. When looking at the sea, mountains can be seen here in Brazil at the Copacabana.

And suddenly I had shit on my foot. I looked upwards but there was no tree and I couldn’t see a bird either. I asked E to stop so that I could clean my shoe and my foot. I had tissues in my bag. As soon as I had taken off my sandal, a man had taken it away to clean it. We followed him. Then he asked me to put my foot on a little wood step, what I did. He had a wet grey towel which was more than disgusting and cleaned my foot and my shoe with it, first the foot. E gave him money but this was not enough for the business man. He wanted 25. Now I knew from where the shit came. Not from a bird, there were no birds, but whoever managed it to throw this stuff on my foot, he/she could aim very well. We only had 15 or 50 Lira. Of course this shoe and foot cleaner had no change. He wanted more and more money. Yeah and now I know how it can happen that you lose your money and clothes at the Copacabana. Finally he got change. We gave him 25. Several times money changed hands. We finally were all very angry (not really), but we all played our roles very well. After this discussion we took a taxi to the hotel  and here we are again. Oh yes, the Copacabana is a nice place. So many beautiful bodies can be admired there. This is true. Tanned, strong, slim bodies are there, shown around by people who obviously love their bodies.
These stories are part of travelling. Nothing really awful happened and tomorrow morning we’ll leave this wonderful city. Rio is worth to go. I regret that we only had 2 days here, so it is.

Buying Buddhist Meditation Cds Over The Internet »

Buddhist meditation is used for Buddhism practices. It includes any meditation methods having an objective of attaining enlightenment. In Buddhism classical language, the closest description for meditation is bhavana which means mental development.  Buddhism refers to a non-theistic, dharmic religion, considered a philosophy as well as a structure of psychology. In Pali or Sanskrit (Buddhists major ancient languages), Buddhism is also called as Dhamma or Buddha Dharma, meaning the teachings of Siddharta Gautama (The Awakened One) or the Buddha. It was stated in the early sources that Siddharta was born in Nepal (formerly Lumbini), and he died in India (Kushinagar) at the age of about eighty. He lived approximately around the 5th century BCE. Thereafter, Buddhism has spread all over the subcontinent of India five years after Buddha’s death, in the Southeast, East, and Central Asia, and after two millenniums, in Eastern Europe. There are different forms and types of meditation incorporated in the different Buddhism Schools. For example, in the Tibetan tradition, thousands of meditations associated with visualization are used, while in the tradition of Theravada, there are more than fifty processes for insight development and for concentration development. Most contemporary and classical guides for Buddhist meditation are specific in each school. But some teachers try to crystallize, categorize, and synthesize practices from numerous Buddhist traditions. Theravada, if translated in English means the elder’s way. This is also the oldest Buddhist school ever survived and became the Sri Lanka’s predominant religion (estimated 70% of the total population) for several centuries, likewise in Southeast Asia including Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and some parts of Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Southwest China. It also starts to become popular in Australia and Singapore. Today, there are more than 100 million Theravada Buddhists worldwide. Tibetan Buddhism pertains to the religious body of Buddhist institutions and doctrines in connection with Tibetan’s characteristics. Tibet is the Himalayan regions (Northern Nepal, Ladakh, Sikkim, and Bhutan), Tuva, Buryatia, Mongolia, Russia (Kalymykia), and North-eastern China (Jilin, Manchuria, Heilongjiang).  Because of this wide Buddhism influence, many people are encouraged to incorporate some forms of Buddhist mediations in their life. But, the problem is that they cannot go to these places and enroll in Buddhism Schools. That is why various Buddhist meditation experts and practitioners put it on CDs. So, wherever you are in the world, you can still practice Buddhist meditation to improve your well being. You can purchase some Buddhist meditation CDs online on different Buddhist websites. Some of the CDs contain meditation on loving-kindness; Buddha taught this practice for developing the habit of altruistic or selfless love from the mind. There are also insight meditation CDs containing overviews on the meditation methods and explanations of frameworks about the practice. This type of meditation is presented in different ways and emphasized various teaching aspects. It also discusses the four foundations of mindfulness based from the teachings of Buddha.  You can learn how to purify yourself, overcome lamentation and sorrow, destroy grief and pain, and reach the direction for achieving nirvana. Another available CD contains talks about insight meditation. Through Buddhist meditation CDs, the teachings of Buddha can continue to help people in achieving inner peace and tranquility through the power of the mind. Feel it running through you as it transcends into your life.

Ubbaya padangusthasana »

I heard rather late about it. To come up from  halasana to ubbaya padangusthasana shall happen with straight legs. This makes this sitting asana to a balancing pose.
The usual suspicions help:
1. Correct breathing: Come up with inhaling
2. Engage the bandhas.
3. Dristhi: look upwards to the toes and stretch the body.
4. What helps me is that I stretch the feet upwards. I can balance out the pose with these little movements of my feet.
A trick: I have learned this by M, my yoga teacher here. When you don’t manage it to come up with straight legs, put a very soft blanket on your mat and try it on this blanket. Then the rolling becomes slow motion. It’s easier to learn the timing (matching the breath with the movement) when coming up slower.
To learn coming up with straight legs with a soft blanket on the mat is especially helpful for the next pose urdhva mukha paschimottanasana.
What else: Tim Miller, yes, THE Tim Miller, the one who has his studio on Encititas, the one who was interviewed in the book about Guruji about his experiences with P. Jois, India, and the practice, has started a blog. Here is the link.
If you like, join me on facebook. The link is on the right side of this blog. Thank you.

See yourself…..Rio de Janeiro, Brasil »

 See yourself.....Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

To discover new countries often means to step out of the comfort zone. We heard horror stories before our trip. The worst was from the banker who has been in Brasil. She told me that a man was forced with a knife to put off his jeans and his shoes, because they were precious brands. He had to walk back to the hotel from Copacapana beach, dressed only with his underwear. I saw myself already walking home with my underwear from one of the beaches. When they (they?) see my underwear they want those, too, I thought. Horror stories! Crimes happen everywhere in the world. It is important not to be naiv, for sure. One has to see oneself!

My first impressions are simply great. Volleyball nets are on the beach. Young people play outside. It has not the exotic like India. It is all so familiar: traffic jam at rush hour like everywhere in the world. People speak very well English, which is very good as we do not speak Portugese. Yes, I regret this already. But so it is.
Restaurants are open, one can sit outside, laundry dries in the fresh air. People relax on benches.

Later at night we had dinner outside at the restaurant hotel with view to the sea. I had a vegetarian pizza with an orange-mango-banana drink. Yes the arrival here in this beautiful country was fantastic. Time to step on my mat.

Then we’ll explore the world around us.
